Do You
Turn the Oven On
For the Baking Soda
to Work?

Just got the following question:

You say to Start with a cold
oven.  So, do you turn the oven
on for the baking soda to work??
You do not mention turning the
oven on.

No need to turn the oven on. No
need to keep it off.

Just use your oven as desired and
let the baking soda work.

See this post for more of the same:

  1. HI Ed Abbott I read your website today and i am trying it now what your advise about the baking soda solution on how to clean an oven . It has leftover grime and blackish hard to remove stains on the side of the oven walls then on top of the oven roof brown oil grimes accumulated..i havent been really cleaning it after i used it..i didnt really understand some on how to do it, so this is my question>> you said to spray everyday the baking soda solution especially for those hard to remove and left for months or years not been dealt with..so..1) after spraying them i wont touch them or even wipe them ?? 2) next day and many days to come , i will just spray them again and again without wiping it off the baking soda solution? 3)even if i use the oven to bake food, the sprayed solution will just remain their untouched or unwiped? 4)if that is the case in no.3, after baking should i wait it will become cold and i will spray the solution again or even while the oven is hot i can spray the solution? 5) if you said that the solution remains unwiped everyday and i use it to cook and bake food, of course residue of the baking soda can splatter or drip and go to my food, will taht cause any harm to our food and to us eating it afterwards? 6) should the baking soda solution be in thick solution or bit of wet type in the spray bottle? please help me with these enquiry i am asking . thank you and regards.

    1. Hello Yvemarie L.,

So sorry being so slow to reply. It has been a busy summer.

I recommend that you forgo the spray bottle and create a very thick baking soda paste instead. To make the paste, just add a little tiny bit of water to baking soda in a container that will hold water. A small, deep pan can be used to mix the baking soda.

Instead of spraying the baking soda on the sides of the oven, rub it on. In school as children we used to do something called finger painting. Paint the slightly wet baking soda with your fingers on to the sides of the oven.

Continue to finger paint baking soda on to the sides of your oven until it dries. Then gently wipe it off with a cloth. Much of the black stuff should come off the first time you try this, but only if you allow the baking soda to completely dry first.

Use the finger painting technique until it all comes off. This will take a number of tries, but it will work. At least, it works for me when I try it.

Forget about using the spray bottle. Ovens are more complicated now, so I'm reluctant to recommend a spray bottle as I don't want anyone to get baking soda stuck in the vents of their oven.

As for baking soda in your food, it is often a part of many recipes in small quantities. It should do no harm.

      Hope this helps!

      Kind regards,

      Ed Abbott
